This year’s theme for the May 17-19 STC Summit in Bloomington, MN, was “Tech Comm in Action.” The theme also applied to Policies & Procedures SIG members who actively promoted the SIG, presented educational sessions, and were recognized at the Honors event for their contributions to the STC.
Here is a recap of P&P SIG members in action along with some photos from the event!
P&P SIG Fun Stuff
Friday – Sunday, SIG ambassadors: Tricia Spayer, P&P SIG leader, and Monte, P&P SIG mascot, served as the SIG’s ambassadors during the conference. They promoted the SIG and chatted with attendees. As a thank you, attendees chose a bendable from a wide variety of fun figures, from space aliens to unicorns.
Friday – Sunday, SIG swag: STC community swag (small giveaways that promote the communities) is a fun Summit tradition. This year the SIG leadership gave away canvas pencil cases with a tag listing the P&P SIG website and embossed with sayings that related to this year’s theme (such as “Attitude determines direction” and a tech comm favorite activity, “Ask questions”). The bags were filled with a Policies & Procedures SIG branded pencil, a temporary emoji tattoo, and a snack bag of chocolate chip cookies.
Friday, Dine-around: Tricia Spayer and Ann Marie Queeney co-hosted a dine-around at the Cantina Laredo in the Mall of America. All attendees who pay for their own meals gather at various restaurants for socializing. Yes, Monte was there!
P&P SIG Educational Sessions
A well-attended panel, “Exploring Policies & Procedures in Business Continuity, Aerospace/Defense, and a Not-for-Profit Health Organization” was held on Friday. The panelists provided an insider’s perspective on their respective fields: P&P SIG member Kelly Smith (business continuity), P&P SIG member Marilyn Woelk (not-for-profit health organization), and John Clement (aerospace/defense and the importance of internships for your career). Ann Marie Queeney, the moderator, took time to promote the P&P SIG. Tricia and Monte were also available.
The following P&P SIG members also presented their own sessions or participated in panels: Bethany Aguad, Ben Woelk, Marilyn Woelk, Deanne Levander, Cindy Pao, Kelly Schrank, Ann Marie Queeney, and Tricia Spayer.
Tricia and Ann Marie also spoke with attendees and presenters at the Summit and are in the process of scheduling webinars for P&P SIG members. Please read the newsletter and check out the P&P SIG Slack channel for the latest information regarding educational webinars.
P&P SIG Member Honored
Cynthia (Cindy) Pao was recognized as an STC Fellow at the Summit’s Honors Event. According to the STC website, “Becoming an STC Fellow is a lifelong journey of achievement, an honor bestowed by the Society upon Associate Fellows who have continued to make exemplary contributions to the arts and science of technical communication, and for sustained and significant service to STC. These contributions involve significant achievements that advance the profession and its recognition.”
In conclusion, the Summit was a fun, productive time for all attendees. We encourage all STC members to attend the Summit as it is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the field of tech comm in a friendly, welcoming environment.
