Like other STC communities, the P&P SIG has seen a reduction in membership, resulting in decreased volunteers and participation.
In addition, longtime P&P SIG manager Sam Lee is stepping down, leaving a vital leadership position open.
The P&P SIG leadership team has explored ways we can meet these challenges and continue serving STC members interested in the policies and procedures field. The team would like to share our proposal with you at a special virtual town hall on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 7 – 8 p.m. ET.
You must register to receive the link to the meeting.
The meeting will begin with a brief presentation of the current state of the SIG and our proposal. The remainder of the town hall will be dedicated to discussion. We want to hear from members!
The Proposal
The team’s proposal would transition the P&P SIG from a COP (Community of Practice) to a SIG COI (Community of Interest). This transition would allow the SIG to offer members networking and opportunities to meet virtually while streamlining our requirements and operation.
Per the STC website: “SIGs that are Communities of Interest (COIs) will provide a channel for open communication and discussion, as well as other social media platforms.”
SIG COIs are:
- Focused on virtual discussion and networking via social media. The P&P SIG already has its own STC Slack channel, which will continue to be active.
- Streamlined operations. The leader of a SIG COI is called the facilitator. The facilitator is responsible for the P&P SIG’s STC Slack channel and other P&P SIG social media. There are no other leadership positions.
The major differences between a SIG COP and SIG COI are these:
- SIG COIs do not receive funding. As a result, a treasurer is not needed.
- SIG COPs receive $7 pass-through funding from STC to fund SIG COP activities. This funding is based on membership numbers.
- SIG COIs do not have websites. However, depending on the content, a SIG may archive its content as part of the transition process.
- STC members pay $15 for SIG COP membership and $10 for SIG COI membership. The STC members’ $10 fee for SIG COIs is used to support STC office services, which supports SIG COI members and leaders. For example, the P&P SIG COI may use the STC office’s Zoom account to hold a networking session.
Important: The transition to a SIG COI is not a given. However, if members want to continue as a SIG COP, volunteers must step forward to fill the SIG manager/co-manager, treasurer, and programming positions.
Next steps
These are our next steps after the town hall:
- Following the meeting, the leadership team will send a request to vote on the proposal. A recording of the presentation portion only will be included for members who were unable to attend the town hall.
- If the membership votes to transition to a SIG COI, the leadership team will work with Jamye Sagan, the CAC (Community Affairs Committee) Chair to complete the transition.
Thank you for your membership and continued support of the P&P SIG.
