Where in the World is Monte? Answer Revealed for September Contest

Here is the answer for the September edition of the SIG’s fun monthly contest, “Where in the World is Monte, the P&P SIG Mascot?”

SIG members guessed where Monte is in a photo shared by avid traveler Tricia Spayer, a member of the SIG’s leadership team.

Location: Temple of the Masks, Kohunlich Mayan Ruins in Mexico

Winner: Valentina DiPeri, P&P SIG Website Assistant. Valentina identified the exact location.

More from Monte:

Kohunlich is the site of a Mayan city built in the early 6th century A.D. It was abandoned around 1100 A.D.

This site had a quiet, almost reverent air when we visited. There were not many people there, and unlike other similar sites where you are not allowed to touch the ruins, we got to climb all over these ruins!

The Temple of the Masks (built around 500 A.D.,) houses large (approximately 6 feet tall) masks that were carved and painted to resemble Mayan gods. It’s incredible that some of these masks still have color after 1,500 years! Monte was struck by how, if you wait long enough, things come back in style. The masks have nose rings, ear rings, lip rings, and all sorts of other facial “enhancements” that many people use today.
